# Check the Delivery Status of Email Sent from Salesforce

Request an email log to investigate the delivery of email sent through Salesforce in the last 30 days. Email logs support general troubleshooting and delivery analysis, but occasional limits on data availability make them unsuitable for audit, compliance, or legal evidence.

Warning Don’t use email logs for audit, compliance, or legal evidence.

## Request an Email Log

Email log requests have these limits.

- You can request an email log for email sent from Salesforce only within the last 30 days.
- Each email log can span up to seven days and include up to 500,000 records. To review email logs for more than seven days or for more than 500,000 records, create multiple requests.
- You can have up to three pending log requests at one time. If you have three pending requests, wait until at least one request completes before you submit another.

1. From Setup, in the Quick Find box, enter Email Log Files, and then select **Email Log Files**.
2. Click **Request an Email Log**.
3. Specify a **Start Time** and an **End Time** within the last 30 days.
4. For **Include only emails that are addressed to or from**, filter the request to include only entries by specific domain names or email addresses.

To enter more than one filter value, separate each value with a comma. The email log request searches for email that matches any one of the listed values.

For example, to search for emails to or from sales@example.com or an email address with the sales.example.com email domain, enter sales@example.com, sales.example.com. The resulting log includes emails with a Recipient or Message ID Header that includes the sales.example.com email domain.

If you leave this field blank, the email log file includes all email addresses within the specified time range.
5. Select one or more **Mail Event** types.

The event type indicates the status of the email delivery.

    - Reception—the Mail Transfer Agent (MTA) received the message.
    - Delivery—the message was delivered.
    - Transient Failure—Salesforce attempted to deliver the message and the email transmission was delayed. Salesforce retries delivery over a 24-hour period after the first failure.
    - Permanent Failure—Salesforce attempted to deliver the message and encountered a permanent error.

If no option is selected, the email log file includes all email event types.
6. Select the type of **Email Direction**.

Select **Outbound**, **Inbound**, or **Outbound and inbound**.

If no option is selected, the email log file includes only outbound messages.
7. For **Notification Recipients**, enter the email addresses that you want to receive a notification when the email log request is complete.

Your Salesforce email is the default value. To enter more than one address, separate each email address with a comma.
8. Click **Submit Request**.

Salesforce queues email log requests in the order received. Log requests are typically available within 30 minutes of the request.

Find completed logs in the Email Logs list on the Email Log Files page in Setup, or click the link in the notification email.

Each email log line includes details about the sender and recipient, date and time, delivery status, and any associated error codes. For field definitions, see [Email Log File Fields](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sales.email_logs_format.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Use the fields in an email log file to investigate email delivery status, errors, security, and authentication.").

    ![Note](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-sales-sales_productivity-264-0-0-production-enus/b2f6c36a-fa61-4a3c-9752-032ce1818a69/images/icon_note.png)

Note Email log files can contain missing and duplicate lines. See [Email Log Considerations and Limits](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sales.emailadmin_emaillogs_considerations.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Before you request an email log, review request limits, what an email log includes, and when log data can be incomplete. Email logs help Salesforce admins investigate the delivery of email sent through Salesforce, but email logs aren't an audit record.").

See the status of pending requests and get information about failed log requests on the Email Log Files page in Setup. The Pending Email Log Requests list shows the status of incomplete requests. The Email Log Errors list describes requests that failed.

## Resubmit a Failed Email Log Request

If your email log request failed, you can resubmit the same request from the Email Log Files page in Setup. Or adjust your search parameters and submit a new log request.

These limits apply when you resubmit an email log request.

- You can request an email log for email sent from Salesforce only within the last 30 days. If the failed request includes data older than 30 days, submit a new request with an adjusted date range.
- Resubmit requests count toward your maximum of three pending log requests at one time. If you have three pending requests, wait until at least one request completes before you submit another.

1. From Setup, in the Quick Find box, enter Email Log Files, and then select **Email Log Files**.
2. Review the Error Description and determine whether to resubmit the failed request or to request a new email log.

Find your request in the Email Log Errors list, and then review the Error Description.

    1. To request an email log with the same search parameters, click **Resubmit**.
    2. To request an email log with different parameters, click **Request a New Email Log**.

Example

A large date range can cause the log retrieval process to time out before Salesforce can return the data. For those failures, the Error Description is “We can't deliver your logs because of an error. Try searching again.” To resolve that issue, split the large request into smaller date range segments so that each request can finish within the time limit.
