Note  If duplicate accounts aren’t getting flagged, see [Standard Account Matching Rule](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sales.matching_rules_standard_account_rule.htm&language=en_US) in Salesforce Help to learn how Salesforce identifies duplicate records. Work with your Salesforce admin to fine-tune your matching rules if necessary.

1. Open an account record. If duplicates exist for that record, you see a message. To see the duplicate records, click **View Duplicates**.

![An account record, with a button to view potential duplicates](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-sales-sales_core-264-0-0-production-enus/3c339c40-ca6c-49ba-9c6e-684be7a55f80/sales_core/images/accounts/merge_accounts_step_0_2023.png)

You can merge business accounts or person accounts. You can’t merge business and person accounts with each other.
2. Select up to three account records to merge. Click **Next**.

    ![Two duplicate account records](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-sales-sales_core-264-0-0-production-enus/3c339c40-ca6c-49ba-9c6e-684be7a55f80/sales_core/images/accounts/merge_accounts_step_1_2023.png)
3. Select one account record as the principal record. Salesforce retains any data in hidden or read-only fields, such as sharing settings, from the primary record. Then, select any other field values that you want to keep and click **Next**.

![Two potential duplicate account records, with options to select field values from each](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-sales-sales_core-264-0-0-production-enus/3c339c40-ca6c-49ba-9c6e-684be7a55f80/sales_core/images/accounts/merge_accounts_step_2_2023.png)
4. Confirm your choices and merge.

Note To merge accounts that are not detected by duplicate rules, use the merge tool in Salesforce Classic. See [Merge Duplicate Accounts in Salesforce Classic](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sales.account_merge_classic.htm&language=en_US) in Salesforce Help.
