# Define Which Data to Capture Through an Einstein Activity Capture Configuration

Configurations determine which data gets captured and how it flows between Salesforce and your connected account. You create one configuration during the initial setup and you can add more to customize data capture and sync behavior for specific users or profiles. By default, Einstein Activity Capture syncs events and contacts bi-directionally, though you can edit these settings at any time.

Note We’re reorganizing the Einstein Activity Capture documentation. We’re moving some information around, but we aren’t deleting anything.

Starting in April 2026, if you have users outside of a configuration, we automatically create a configuration and add those users to it. The timeline for this automatic change is unique to each org. Check your Einstein Activity Capture settings to see if this applies to your org and for a specific date for the change.

1. From Setup, enter Einstein Activity Capture in the Quick Find box, and then select **Settings**.

If it’s your first time setting up Einstein Activity Capture, the setup flow guides you through the steps. If you’re moving from Lightning Sync or you already use Einstein Activity Capture but it’s your first time creating a configuration, click **Add Contact and Event Sync**, and then follow the guided steps.
2. From the Configuration tab, click **New Configuration**.
3. Give the configuration a name and description.
4. Review the email, events, and contact settings, and then click **Next**.

    Tip

    - If you sync contacts, we recommend that you [export your contact data on a regular basis](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=xcloud.admin_exportdata.htm&type=5&language=en_US).
    - If you sync contacts both ways, you can improve sync performance by setting the contact filter to Contacts Users Own.
    - If you sync events, we recommend that users [prepare events that they don’t want to sync](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sales.aac_event_sync_prepare.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "If your Salesforce admin configured Einstein Activity Capture to sync events, review our suggestions for making sure it works the way you want.") before you activate the configuration.
5. Review the advanced settings for emails, events, and contacts. Email messages are captured from the connected account and stored in Salesforce. By default, events and contacts sync bi-directionally between the connected account and Salesforce.
6. Add users and profiles to the configuration, and then click **Next**.

To add users to a configuration, make sure that you first [assign users to Einstein Activity Capture](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sales.aac_setup_give_access.htm&type=5&language=en_US). If you're migrating from Lightning Sync, you can add users who show \[Lightning Sync\] after their name to an Einstein Activity Capture configuration. To give these users access to Einstein Activity Capture features, you must assign them to Einstein Activity Capture and turn off Lightning Sync.

Up to 500 users or profiles are visible at a time. To add more than 500 users directly or via profile at a time, or to edit user assignments when the configuration has more than 500 users, [use the UserEmailCalendarSync object](https://developer.salesforce.com/docs/atlas.en-us.object_reference.meta/object_reference/sforce_api_objects_useremailcalendarsync.htm) via the API.

If a user is added to configurations at the user level and at the profile level, the user-level assignment is recognized. You can track the [status of all connected users](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sales.eac_setup_status_and_metrics.htm&type=5&language=en_US) and [get notified when user's connections are in trouble](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=sales.aac_setup_admin_notification.htm&type=5&language=en_US).
