# Send Emails with Direct Email Send API

Use Direct Email Send API to send emails to one or more recipients programmatically.

**Where:** This change applies to Salesforce Enterprise and Unlimited editions with:

- Marketing Cloud Next Growth and Advanced editions with the Salesforce Foundations add-on
- Marketing Cloud Account Engagement Growth, Plus, Advanced, or Premium editions with the Salesforce Foundations add-on
- Any Marketing Cloud Engagement+ edition with the Salesforce Foundations add-on

**Why:** Previously, to send messages from the API in Marketing Cloud Next, you created an on-demand flow, and then used the API to trigger the flow. With Direct Email Send API, you create the send definition for an email, and then send messages when needed, without creating a flow.

**How:** First, create an email send definition, which contains the content, sender profile, and feature configuration for the email. Next, use Direct Email Send API to identify the recipients, preview the message, and send it.
