Stockroom managers, inventory auditors, and IT fulfillers scan barcodes and QR codes on hardware asset tags to look up records and process orders using the Salesforce mobile app. The Mobile Barcode Scanner uses device cameras, eliminating the need for third-party SDKs, AppExchange packages, or dedicated hardware.
Where: This change applies to the Salesforce mobile app for iOS and Android in Enterprise, Performance, and Unlimited editions with IT Service and the Hardware Asset Management add-on.
Who: Users need the appropriate Hardware Asset Management permissions to perform scanning actions. The Hardware Asset Management IT Fulfiller permission set provides access to fulfillment and return processing. Users with broader Hardware Asset Management roles, such as Asset Manager and Inventory Manager, can also perform these actions based on their assigned permissions.
Why: With the Mobile Barcode Scanner, you can:
- Scan up to 20 assets in a single session with multi-scan continuous mode, so stockroom workers process receiving faster.
- Catch fulfillment errors before they ship. The app immediately flags any mismatch between a scanned device and a fulfillment order line item. For example, scanning an iPhone for a MacBook Pro triggers an instant flag.
- Recover from missing records without leaving the workflow. If a scanned serial number doesn't match an existing asset, users can try again the scan or enter the serial number manually. They can also create the asset directly from the scan screen.
