# Agents Now Default to Error Mode for File Uploads

Agentforce agents that can receive file uploads from a client now default to error mode, so you have more control over agent file handling. Previously, agents that can receive files defaulted to auto mode, and your agent decided how to handle the file. In error mode, when someone uploads a file, the agent sends a customizable error message. If you want your agent to accept file uploads, you must add the file upload parameter to your agent’s script and specify a mode. If you don't want your agent to accept file uploads but you don't want it to send an error message, you can specify the disabled mode in the file upload parameter of your agent's script. You can also control which clients can accept file uploads.

**Where:** This change applies to Lightning Experience in Enterprise, Performance, Unlimited, and Developer Editions with Foundations or Agentforce 1 Editions. Setup for AI agents is available on the desktop site.

**When:** This change is available on a rolling basis in Salesforce orgs upgraded to Winter ’27 starting the week of October 12, 2026. Go to [trust.salesforce.com](http://trust.salesforce.com) for exact dates.

**How:** To set up an Agentforce agent to accept file uploads, create a dedicated subagent for processing files and add instructions to tell your agent how to handle the files it receives and how to use them in the conversation. Then in Script view, add the `file_upload` parameter to your agent’s config block and specify either `auto` or `managed` mode. Otherwise, your agent defaults to `error` mode. Make sure the client for any channels your agent is connected to is configured to accept files.

```
config:
    developer_name: "Support_Agent"
    agent_label: "Customer Support Agent"
    file_upload:
        mode: "auto" | "managed"
```

To customize your agent’s error message for file uploads, in Script view, add the `file_upload` parameter to your agent’s config block and specify `error` mode. Then specify a `message`.

```
config:
    developer_name: "Support_Agent"
    agent_label: "Customer Support Agent"
    file_upload:
        mode: "error"
        message: "Sorry, I can't accept files. Is there something else I can help you with?"
```
