# Build and Navigate Semantic Models with Smart Canvas

Author and navigate semantic models of any size with the enhanced canvas in the Semantic Model Builder. Smart auto-layout reflows the canvas in real time, relationship lines never cross, and domain-based grouping and focus mode make even large-object Customer 360 models clear and traceable. Switch to the enhanced canvas using the in-product toggle; the previous canvas remains available.

**Where:** This change applies to Lightning Experience with Data 360 and Tableau Next in Enterprise, Performance, and Unlimited editions. To configure or modify models, users must have edit permissions for the Semantic Model builder.

**When:** This update is available starting in August 2026.

**Why:** The previous canvas in the Semantic Model Builder reached its limits at 50 or more objects, making large foundational models like Customer 360 hard to navigate and author. The enhanced canvas is built for that scale. Smart auto-layout, non-crossing relationship lines, domain grouping, and focus mode work together to keep even 150-object models clear and traceable.

**How:** Open a semantic model in the Semantic Model Builder and click **Try Now** in the notification banner to switch to the enhanced canvas. To apply auto-layout, click **Auto Arrange** in the canvas toolbar. To return to the previous canvas, click the toggle again.
