When you extend a semantic model, it inherits all definitions from the base model — data objects, fields, relationships, calculated fields, and metrics. Now you can customize that inherited calculation logic and metric definitions to match your business, while everything you don't override keeps inheriting automatically from the base model. This approach preserves a single source of truth; your extended model stays aligned with the base for shared definitions, and diverges only where you intend it to.
Where: This change applies to Data Cloud in Enterprise and Unlimited editions where Tableau Semantics is enabled.
When: This change is available starting in August 2026.
Who: This feature is available to users with the Tableau Next Standard license, or to Data Cloud users without a Tableau Next license. Editing a model requires Edit access to that semantic model. No additional permission is needed.
Why: A prebuilt analytics app ships with standard metric definitions that don't always match your business. Before, changing a locked metric meant cloning it and rebuilding every dashboard that used it. Now you change the underlying calculated field once, and every dependent metric and dashboard update automatically.
How: In the In the Semantic Model Builder, open an extended model and edit a calculated field or metric to change its formula or properties. Once saved, the calculated field or metric disconnects from the base definition and no longer receives updates made to it.
To connect it back to the base definition, select the calculated field or metric and click Revert. If you've only overridden the calculated field name, description, or visibility, you can resume automatic updates by selecting Revert on that property.
For a calculated field, overriding the display name, description, or visibility disconnects only that property from the base model — everything else keeps inheriting automatically. Overriding any other property, such as the formula, data type, or filters, disconnects the entire calculated field. For a metric, overriding any property disconnects the entire metric. To reconnect it and restore the original definition, reconnect the field or metric to its base at any time.
If the original calculated field is removed from the base model, the override becomes a standalone field. You can't revert a standalone field, but you can delete it.
