# Compare Different Periods in Tableau Next Metrics

You now have more control over the period used to calculate a metric’s change over time. When you create a metric, set a primary comparison and an optional secondary comparison period. For example, your primary comparison measures month-over-month change. And your secondary comparison measures year-over-year change. When primary and secondary comparisons are set, they appear on both the card and on the metric’s detail page.

**Where:** This change applies to Tableau Next in Enterprise, Performance, and Unlimited editions.

**How:** Add a Metric to a Semantic Model or edit an existing metric, select a time dimension, select a primary comparison, and set an optional secondary comparison.
