# Accurately Track Hardware Inventory with Asset-Based Locations

Monitor your devices based on specific lifecycle states instead of a single Quantity-on-Hand metric. Distinguish your IT asset management inventory from standard serialized product inventory. You can also view multiple quantity fields on product item records, such as available, allocated, in transit, damaged, and on hold, to get an accurate picture of deployable assets.

**Where:** This change applies to Lightning Experience in Enterprise, Performance, and Unlimited editions.

**How:** To differentiate your IT hardware asset inventory from standard serialized product inventory, select usage type for a Location record as Asset-Based, and mark it as an inventory location.
