# Deploy and Version Control Prompt Templates with the Metadata API

Prompt Builder templates are now fully supported in the Salesforce Metadata API (MDAPI), enabling deployment automation, version control, and CI/CD integration. Use Salesforce CLI, SFDX, or third-party deployment tools to retrieve, deploy, and track changes to prompt templates alongside your other metadata.

**Where:** This change applies to Lightning Experience in Enterprise, Performance, and Unlimited editions with the Foundations and the Agentforce for Sales or Service add-on, or included in Agentforce 1 Editions. Generative AI is available in Lightning Experience.

**When:** This feature is available starting the week of June 8, 2026.

**Why:** Treating prompt templates as metadata enables version control, automated deployment, environment promotion, and rollback capabilities. Teams can now manage prompts through the same CI/CD pipelines used for other Salesforce metadata.

**How:** To retrieve or deploy prompt templates, use the Salesforce CLI project retrieve start and project deploy start commands with the `genAiPromptTemplate` metadata type. You can also deploy specific templates by including the `genAiPromptTemplate` type and template names in your `package.xml` manifest file.
