# Prepare for Step-Up Authentication with an In-App Prompt

With upcoming step-up authentication requirements, Salesforce prompts users to verify their identity for sensitive actions, such as report exports. To help users prepare, Salesforce now prompts them to register a verification method.

**Where:** This change is available in Lightning Experience and Salesforce Classic in all editions.

**When:** This prompt is available on a rolling basis starting in May 2026. Step-up authentication requirements take effect starting in June 2026, beginning with report exports.

**How:** After a user logs in, they see a prompt titled “Prepare for New Identity Verification Requirements.” The prompt appears if the user doesn't have at least one of these verification methods set up:

- [Salesforce multi-factor authentication (MFA) method](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=xcloud.mfa_supported_verification_methods.htm&language=en_US&type=5)
- Verified phone number
- Verified email address

Note Users must register a verification method with Salesforce even if they log in with single sign-on (SSO). Users can’t complete step-up authentication using a verification method from their SSO identity provider.
