Each role has distinct responsibilities, required permissions, and tasks. Many teams have users who perform multiple roles. Lifecycle Center admins can assign multiple permission sets to the same user.

## Lifecycle Center Admin

Role: Configure and maintain Lifecycle Center, manage team access, and create projects and pipelines.

You're an admin if: You have the Lifecycle Center Admin permission set and set up Lifecycle Center for your organization.

Get started:

- [Plan Your Lifecycle Center Setup](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.devops_center_plan_setup.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Before you configure Lifecycle Center, plan how your team works and what your release process looks like. The decisions you make during setup, such as how many pipeline stages to create, which environments to connect, and which source control provider to use, shape how effectively Lifecycle Center works for your organization."): Planning considerations and prerequisites.
- [Set Up Lifecycle Center](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.next_gen_devops_center_setup.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Configure Lifecycle Center (formerly next-generation DevOps Center) to manage your release management lifecycle. Review the prerequisites, access the feature, manage users, and set up your projects and pipelines."): Step-by-step setup process.

Common tasks:

- Manage projects, teams, and pipelines.
- Connect and replace sandboxes.
- Handle sandbox refreshes.

## Development Team Member

Role: Create changes in development environments, commit to source control, and respond to pull request feedback.

You're a development team member if: You have the Lifecycle Center User permission set and Customize Application permission in development environments. This role includes both declarative users who build with clicks and programmatic developers who write code.

Get started:

- [Get Started as a Team Member](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.next_gen_devops_center_team_member_get_started.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "After your team manager or Lifecycle Center Admin sets up Lifecycle Center, they notify you when the Lifecycle Center org is ready. As part of the setup process, they create one or more projects, pipelines, and work items. They also add each team member’s source-tracked development environment."): Complete walkthrough from first change to commit.
- [Work Outside the Lifecycle Center UI](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.devops_center_work_outside_ui.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Use your preferred local development tools to work on Lifecycle Center work items and commit changes directly to source control. After merging your changes, complete the promotion in Lifecycle Center."): Use developer tools of your choice.

Common tasks:

- Sync changes from other team members.
- View and commit changes.
- Add metadata and configuration data to work items.
- Approve pull requests and respond to feedback.

## Testing Manager

Role: Define testing strategy, configure test providers, add test suites, define quality gate rules, run on-demand testing, and view test results.

You're a testing manager if: You have the Lifecycle Center Testing Manager permission set and are responsible for setting up Lifecycle Center Testing based on your project's testing requirements.

Get started:

- [Set Up Lifecycle Center Testing](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.devops_center_testing_setup.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Configure Lifecycle Center Testing to enforce quality at every stage of your pipeline, from the first review to the final promotion into production."): Configure test providers and assign test suites to pipeline stages.

Common tasks:

- Configure test providers (Apex Unit Testing, Code Analyzer v5, Flow Tests, partner solutions).
- Assign test suites to pipeline stages.
- Define quality gate rules (minimum pass percentages, severity thresholds, essential test requirements).
- Analyze test execution results when test cases fail.
- Troubleshoot and rerun failed tests manually when automated execution needs verification.

## Deployment Manager

Role: Coordinate releases, promote changes through pipeline stages, and resolve deployment issues.

You're a deployment manager if: You have the Lifecycle Center Deployment Manager permission set and access to all pipeline environments.

Get started:

- [Get Started as a Deployment Manager](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.next_gen_devops_center_deployment_manager_quick_start.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Promote approved work items through your pipeline stages from development to production. Coordinate releases, review test results, and ensure quality changes reach production safely. You don't require a developer background for this role."): Your first promotion walkthrough.
- [Promote Work Items](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.devops_center_promote_work_items.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Move your work items through a predefined sequence of pipeline stages, guiding them from development to production. "): Step-by-step promotion process.

Common tasks:

- Resolve merge conflicts.
- Handle external merges.
- Manage stalled promotions.
- Troubleshoot deployment failures.
- View test results and run on-demand testing.

## How Roles Work Together

Lifecycle Center integrates source control with continuous delivery through a pipeline workflow.

- Admins set up Lifecycle Center and create projects.
- Testing managers set up test providers, assign test suites to each pipeline stage, and define quality gate rules.
- Declarative users and programmatic developers make changes in development environments and commit to source control.
- Team members review and approve changes through pull requests.
- Lifecycle Center automatically runs the configured tests to validate changes.
- Deployment managers promote approved changes through pipeline stages to production.
