# Cost-Effective Alternative for Creating Service Resources

Salesforce Scheduler is an add-on based product. It requires a base license, such as Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, Lightning CRM, or Platform Starter, to operate. If you’re looking for a cost-effective alternative to these base licenses, try the Platform Starter license, a license with limited capabilities. Assign the Lightning Platform Starter license and the Salesforce Scheduler add-on to users, such as sales associates and healthcare providers, who don’t schedule their own appointments. Users, such as customer service representatives, community users, or guest users, can create service appointments for these service resources.

## Capabilities of Salesforce Scheduler with the Lightning Platform Starter License

Services resources with the Salesforce Scheduler add-on and the Lightning Platform Starter license can:

- View Salesforce Calendar events.
- View and update details of their own appointments. For example, they can change the status of their appointments to Completed.

    ![Important](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-platform-scheduler-264-0-0-production-enus/0530be2f-891f-4263-a0d7-96ddca56a717/images/icon_important.png)

Important Users with the platform starter license can’t create service appointments.
- Cancel their own appointments.
- Create and update their own operating hours.
- Create and update their own shifts.
- Manage their own absences.

The Salesforce Scheduler add-on with a Platform Starter license provides access to these entities:

- Operating Hours
- Shifts
- Engagement Channel Types
- Service Appointments
- Service Territory
- Work Type Group
- Work Type
- Appointment Topic Timeslot
- Service Resources:
    - Resource Absence
    - Service Territory Member

To make Salesforce Calendar events visible to service resources, set the value of the Calendar picklist to Default On. For more information, see [View and Edit Tab Settings in Permission Sets and Profiles](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.users_tab_visibility.htm&type=5&language=en_US) and [Tab Settings](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.permissions_tab_settings_ref.htm&type=5&language=en_US).

To provide access to other capabilities, create permission sets with the necessary user permissions and assign them to service resources.

For information on how to create and assign permission sets, see [Configure Who Can Be a Service Resource](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.ls_manage_perms.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Service resources are individual users in your org who can attend appointments with clients. Before you can create service resources, create or identify users who you want to be available as service resources. Then, assign them the Salesforce Scheduler permission set license via a permission set to make them available for appointments.").

Always add the service resource’s profile to the community’s member list. For more information, see [Add Members to Your Experience Cloud Site](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.networks_customize_members.htm&type=5&language=en_US).

## Limitations of Salesforce Scheduler with the Lightning Platform License

Service resources with the Salesforce Scheduler add-on and the Lightning Platform Starter license can’t:
