# Add Validation Rules to Service Appointment Fields

Add validation rules to ensure that user inputs meet your requirements. You can also use validation rules to override the default error messages. For example, you can add a validation rule that enables users to save an appointment only after they enter a subject.

When users save an appointment, Salesforce Scheduler checks if all the validation rules are met. If a rule isn’t met, Salesforce Scheduler shows the configured error message. This also applies when a service resource runs the **Start Appointment**, **End Appointment**, or **Accept Appointment** actions in the My Appointments console.

1. From the object management settings for service appointment, go to Validation Rules.
2. Click **New**.
3. Enter a rule name, error condition formula, and error message.

Note To check your formula for errors, click **Check Syntax**.
4. Save your changes.
