# Null Values

Learn null values are interpreted by External Services.

### Required Editions

<table class="slds-table slds-table_bordered slds-max-medium-table_stacked slds-m-bottom_small edition"><colgroup><col></colgroup><tbody><tr class=""><td class="slds-cell-wrap" style="vertical-align:top;">Available in: Lightning Experience</td></tr><tr class=""><td class="slds-cell-wrap" style="vertical-align:top;">Available in: <strong>Enterprise</strong>, <strong>Performance</strong>, <strong>Unlimited</strong>, and <strong>Developer</strong> Editions</td></tr></tbody></table>

OpenAPI 2.0 doesn’t support the JSON or YAML schema type `null`. See [JSON Schema - 4.2.1 Instance Data Model](https://json-schema.org/draft/2020-12/json-schema-core.html#rfc.section.4.2.1).

OpenAPI 3.0 has added support to allow values to be nullable. See [OpenAPI 3 - Schema Object](https://swagger.io/specification/#schema-object).

External services allow null values in the request payload or the response payload for both OpenAPI 2.0 and 3.0 specifications regardless of whether the specification forbids or explicitly allows its use.

Tip If null values aren’t allowed for your service integration, validate the request payload for null values before invoking an external service.
