# Commit Changes to Source Repository

Commit changes to your source repository directly from the Change Management tab. After you make the changes, decide which changes to include for the work item and commit them to the Lifecycle Center project’s source control repository.

## Connect to Lifecycle Center

Connect your development environment (sandbox, scratch org, or Developer Edition org) to your Lifecycle Center project.

Make sure that Lifecycle Center is accessible from the App Launcher. See [Access Lifecycle Center](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.devops_center_enable_for_users.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Lifecycle Center is enabled by default in your Salesforce org, so you don't have to turn it on. You can open it directly from the App Launcher. The first time you open it, accept the DX Tools terms and conditions.").

1. Log in to your sandbox, scratch org, or Developer Edition org.
2. Click ![DX Inspector icon](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-platform-devops_center-264-0-0-production-enus/166010c3-4c34-4087-92ad-aea917baf524/devops_center/images/dx_inspector_icon.png) on DX Inspector to open the DX Inspector panel.
3. From the DX Inspector panel, open the **Change Management** tab.
4. Click ![Down arrow icon](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-platform-devops_center-264-0-0-production-enus/166010c3-4c34-4087-92ad-aea917baf524/devops_center/images/next_gen_dropdown_icon.png), and then select **Connect Lifecycle Center**.

This action authenticates the connection to the Lifecycle Center source repository. On successful authentication, all uncommitted changes are listed.

## Select Metadata to Commit

Metadata defines the structure of your Salesforce org, such as custom objects, fields, and layouts.

If there are no work items, [create a work item](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.devops_center_work_item_create.htm&language=en_US) in DX Inspector or Lifecycle Center.

1. On the Metadata tab, select the metadata files to commit.
2. (Optional) Add metadata manually. See [Add Metadata Manually](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.devops_center_add_metadata.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "The Change Management tab uses source tracking to automatically track metadata files in your org. However, when you require flexibility to include additional metadata files that source tracking hasn’t pulled automatically, you can add metadata manually.").
3. (Optional) To view relationships for a selected metadata component, click the down arrow ![Down arrow icon](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-platform-devops_center-264-0-0-production-enus/166010c3-4c34-4087-92ad-aea917baf524/devops_center/images/next_gen_dropdown_icon.png) icon, then select **View Dependencies...**.

The Metadata Dependencies window shows the metadata relationship in a hierarchical tree.

4. (Optional) Select related metadata to include in the commit.

## Select Data Records to Commit

Configuration data includes the records that your app needs to run, such as custom settings and price book entries. Map these records with a unique External ID so Lifecycle Center identifies and matches them correctly in the target environment.

1. On the Data tab, find the data object that you want to commit.
2. In the data object row, click the down arrow (![Down arrow icon](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-platform-devops_center-264-0-0-production-enus/166010c3-4c34-4087-92ad-aea917baf524/devops_center/images/next_gen_dropdown_icon.png)) icon, and then select **Select Associated Records...**.
3. To configure the selected object, complete these steps:

    1. Select a unique External ID to map records and prevent duplicates.
    2. (Optional) To include only specific fields, click **Edit Fields...**. By default, the required fields are selected.
    3. (Optional) To commit a subset of records, click **Add Filters**, and define your filter criteria.

4. Click **Select Related Objects**.

Related parent and child objects are listed. Parent objects are selected by default.
5. On the Child Objects tab, select a unique External ID to map records and prevent duplicates.

![Window showing child objects that you can configure](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-platform-devops_center-264-0-0-production-enus/166010c3-4c34-4087-92ad-aea917baf524/devops_center/images/next_gen_dx_select_child_object.png)
6. Select the records to commit, then click **Review Configuration.**
7. (Optional) In the data object row, click the down arrow ( ![Down arrow icon](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-platform-devops_center-264-0-0-production-enus/166010c3-4c34-4087-92ad-aea917baf524/devops_center/images/next_gen_dropdown_icon.png)) icon to download or remove the records.
8. Review the list of filtered records and click **Add**.

## Commit Metadata and Data

Committing changes links your selected metadata and data changes to a work item. Lifecycle Center stores committed changes in the repository branch created when the work item moved to the In Progress status.

1. On the Change Management tab, click **Commit Options…**.
2. Select a Lifecycle Center project.

![Changes page, showing source-tracked, metadata changes in the org](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-platform-devops_center-264-0-0-production-enus/166010c3-4c34-4087-92ad-aea917baf524/devops_center/images/next_gen_dx_commit_changes.png)

Only work items in the project with the statuses In Progress, In Review, and Ready to Promote appears.
3. Select a work item, and then click **Next**.
4. Add a commit comment that clearly describes the changes.

The comment helps in identifying your commit, especially when the work item has multiple commits.
5. Review your changes, and then click **Commit**.

If you configured a .forceignore file, metadata listed in that file is excluded from the commit.

When a commit succeeds, create a change request in DX Inspector. If your commit fails, see [Stalled Commits](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.devops_center_commit_stalled.htm&language=en_US).
