# Backup Exclusions in Backup & Recover for Salesforce

Exclude items that you don't need in a Salesforce backup to protect data privacy or reduce the backup duration.

Backup Exclusions allow you to create rules to control your backup content. Through this new self-service feature, you can select the items you wish to exclude from your backups and have one simple view of everything that is excluded per item with a clear audit trail.

Any previously created exclusion rules are automatically imported to the new view but will not include the when, why, and by who the exclusion rules were created. Once an exclusion rule is created, the selection will not be included in future backups. You may always manage exclusions back at a future time.

By default, new Backup & Recover for Salesforce services exclude Knowledge Base Articles and Custom Big Objects, but these can be enabled if needed.

By default, History Share and Feed Objects are excluded as customers typically find these objects aren't needed for a Restore operation and aren't deemed critical by the business.

- History Tables: Not restorable (read-only) and are often huge.
- Share Tables: By default, during Salesforce setup, are automatically created during a Restore, unless they have manual share rules.
- Feed Tables: Captured by the Own application in FeedItem. FeedItem objects are automatically restored to the individual object by the Own application, meaning that the individual object Feeds is a duplication.

In the Backup Exclusions tab, you can view and manage all the exclusions affecting a backup. You can also create rules to select the items to be excluded if you don't need them in the backup, data security, or to reduce the backup duration.

Note Only Master Admins and Business Unit Admins can add or remove an exclusion rule, otherwise, the New Rule drop-down, and Remove exclusion button is disabled.

Some sObjects are excluded from the backup as they aren't fully supported by the Salesforce API. See [Unsupported Salesforce Metadata Objects for Backup](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.backup_recover_o_objects_unsupported.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "See which Salesforce metadata objects can't be backed up.").
