# Archive a Service in Backup & Recover for Salesforce

Preserve backup data after you migrate, decommission, or duplicate a Salesforce production or sandbox backup service instance. Archiving the service stops it from backing up new data. Access archived data for future restoration or data seeding.

You can archive data services, metadata services, production backup services, and sandbox backup services.

1. Select the service that you want to archive.
2. On the **Options** tab, select the **General** tab.
3. Click the three dots and select **Pause or Archive Service**.

If the option isn't available, contact your business unit’s Admin or Master Admin (as required) to turn on self-serve archiving.
4. Select **Archive Indefinitely**.
5. Click **Archive**.

After the service is archived, you get a confirmation message.

Archiving a backup service generates an event (which appears in the Auditing tab of the Account Settings page) and sends an email. Unarchiving a backup service generates an event, but doesn't send an email.

Warning After you archive a production or sandbox service, daily automatic backups don't run for that service.

Important Although daily automatic backups don't run for the archived service, the data in the archived service is retained. You can restore the data from the archived service.
