# Abort a Running Backup in Backup & Recover for Salesforce

Stop a running Salesforce backup to fix an error in production data, to modify default backup options, or if the backup process slows down other critical jobs.

1. When a backup (scheduled or on demand) is running on a service, the Abort Backup button appears. Click **Abort Backup**.

A confirmation dialog box appears, prompting confirmation.
2. Select a reason to abort the backup:

    - Planned production changes
    - Configuration changes to backup options
    - Prioritization of other activities
    - Other

If you choose Other, add a comment. The reason and comment appear in the Auditing log. To view the Auditing log, go to **Account Settings**, then **Auditing**.
3. Click **Abort**.

    - A confirmation window appears. All the menu tabs for this service show that the backup has been aborted.
    - The Dashboard tab shows an empty circle icon, indicating that the backup has been aborted and isn’t available. The service status shows a Warning.
    - In the Backup History tab, you can view a list of the backups performed recently. The aborted backup has a red label (“Aborted”).
    - Users of this account receive an email informing them that a backup has been manually aborted.

If you aborted a backup, then later on that day you'll need to perform an on-demand backup. This is required in order to capture any changes made that might have been missed due to the aborted backup.
