# Identify Required Fields

Before building a flow, identify the required fields for the object's records. There are two options: use Schema Builder or create a record on the object, but don't save it. Either option shows the required fields, but Schema Builder also shows system populated fields that you don't include in a flow.

To review required fields in Schema Builder, follow these steps.

1. From Setup, in the Quick Find box, enter Object Manager, and then select **Object Manager**.
2. Click **Schema Builder**.
3. Search for the object.
4. Hover on the object and click the magnifying glass.
5. Filter or scan for required fields.

For example, the standard Contact object requires the Last Name field.
6. To verify custom requirements, check whether your org has custom required fields or validation rules that make other fields required.
7. If the object in the flow uses record types, review each record type, as requirements can differ.
