## What the Excel Agent Does

The Excel Agent supports two types of tasks: formula-based calculations by using Excel spreadsheets, and row-level operations on tabular data from CSV files. For both task types, the agent generates a calculation audit workbook (.xlsx) that documents how it completed the task.

For formula-based tasks, the agent runs the task's **Share information** field values through Excel spreadsheet formulas. It extracts the results into the task's **Request information** fields.

For tabular-data tasks, the agent processes the CSV file from an upstream task through the Excel Agent task's **Share information** fields. Operations can include filtering rows or adding calculated columns. The agent stores tabular results as a **Request information** document field. It can also store individual values in single-value fields.

## When to Use the Excel Agent

The Excel Agent is best when your task already involves Excel spreadsheets or CSV files. Assign a task to the Excel Agent to apply existing spreadsheet logic or process CSV files without rewriting that work as task instructions.

Configure a formula-based task when you have an Excel spreadsheet with formulas that do the calculation work. For example, if you have a supplier risk scoring spreadsheet with weighted formulas, upload it and let the Excel Agent handle the math.

Use the tabular-data approach when an upstream task produces a CSV file that requires row-level processing. For example, filter a list of purchase orders or add a calculated total column. The Excel Agent stores the results as a new CSV file. It can also store individual values in single-value fields.

## Limitations

- For formula-based tasks that use an uploaded Excel file, only .xlsx files are supported in the **Documents** field. The .xls, .numbers, and .csv formats are not supported.
- For formula-based tasks, upload the Excel file directly to the task's **Documents** field. You can't pass a dynamic Excel file through a **Share information** field.
- The agent can't insert documents, signatures, or data sources into the Excel file.

- **[Formula-Based Tasks with the Excel Agent (Beta)](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.automate_afsc_ai_agents_excel_formula_based_tasks.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5)**
In formula-based tasks, the Excel Agent uses an existing or generated Excel file to calculate results from stored field values of upstream tasks. The agent stores the results in the task's output fields when Agentforce Operations runs a workflow based on the blueprint.
- **[Tabular Data Tasks with the Excel Agent (Beta)](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.automate_afsc_ai_agents_excel_tabular_data_tasks.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5)**
In tabular-data tasks, the Excel Agent processes a CSV file from an upstream task and stores tabular results as a CSV file. It can also store individual values, such as a total or count, in single-value fields.
