Note This content relates to Archive. For Salesforce Archive, see [Store Data Externally with Salesforce Archive](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=xcloud.archive_overview.htm&type=5&language=en_US).

For a more detailed guide, see [Self-Service Onboarding for Archive](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.archive_o_self_service_onboarding_for_archive.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "The Archive managed package helps businesses remove unnecessary data and minimize storage usage, reducing costs, and enhancing operational efficiency. Archive helps you keep old data that is no longer useful, but must be stored for data retention rules or legal reasons.").

1. Start by outlining archiving objectives, identifying what data must be retained, and setting goals for success. Consider what records need to be [archived](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.archive_o_get_started_with_archive_policies.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Create automated jobs on a regular cadence to either archive data from Salesforce according to your needs, or purge from the Archive managed package for compliance or other requirements.") or [purged](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.archive_o_purge_policies.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Meet data removal rules by setting purge policies in the Archive managed package that go over the original data expiration set when archiving. These policies permanently delete data.").
2. [Install](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.archive_o_install_the_archive_package.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Install and, if necessary, uninstall the Archive managed package.") and [Configure](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.archive_o_archive_settings.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Configure Archive Managed Package 24 Settings and later. You can access all settings outlined here from the Settings tab in the Archive Managed Package.") the Package—Set up a [Salesforce Authenticated User](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.archive_o_auth_user_permission_requirements.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Required setup and configuration for an Authenticated User in the Archive managed package.") with the necessary permissions.
3. Add an [Archive Service](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.archive_o_view_the_archive_console.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "View multiple Archive instances and their statuses from one platform in Archive Console.") to the [Archive Console](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.archive_o_view_the_archive_console.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "View multiple Archive instances and their statuses from one platform in Archive Console.")—Onboard orgs for [cross-region](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.archive_o_view_the_archive_console.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "View multiple Archive instances and their statuses from one platform in Archive Console.") monitoring, [BYOK](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.archive_o_view_the_archive_console.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "View multiple Archive instances and their statuses from one platform in Archive Console.") and [multi-level](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.archive_o_view_the_archive_console.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "View multiple Archive instances and their statuses from one platform in Archive Console.") archiving capabilities.
4. Create Policies: Review policy creation from the [Archive Console](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.archive_o_view_the_archive_console.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "View multiple Archive instances and their statuses from one platform in Archive Console.") and the [Archive Package](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.archive_o_create_policies_from_archive_package.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Create an archive policy for objects that you want to archive.") and learn about [Archiving ContentDocuments](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.archive_o_create_policies_from_archive_package.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Create an archive policy for objects that you want to archive."), [Field Level Security (FLS) Reports](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.archive_o_archive_field_level_security_fls.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Field-level security (FLS) settings in Salesforce are used to prevent access to specific fields in the Archive managed package."), and [Unarchiving](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.archive_o_unarchive_from_archive_search_or_widget.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Restore archived records with Archive Search or Archive Widget in the Archive managed package.").
5. Configure [Archive Search](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.archive_o_archive_search.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Search for and view the records you've archived in the Archive managed package. Archive Search doesn't enforce role hierarchy, sharing, or visibility rules, so limit access to admins. Standard users use the Archive Widget.") and [Archive Widget](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.archive_o_set_up_archive_widget.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Display archived data as related lists within Salesforce. Even though the data has been archived and is no longer stored directly in Salesforce, end users can still access and view the data in the familiar Salesforce interface in the Archive managed package.") for archived data display within Salesforce.

Note Archive automatically indexes most fields so that your records are easy to search. Automatic indexing covers up to 1,000 fields per org and then stops. If a field that matters for your searches isn't indexed, manually index it in Index Fields Setup. See [Manage Index Fields in Archive](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.archive_o_manage_index_fields.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Efficient management of index fields in the Archive managed package is essential for optimizing search and query performance. The Index Fields Setup feature shows admins which fields are indexable so that they can manually select fields to improve search performance. While Archive automatically indexes certain fields based on internal algorithms, some fields can't be indexed at all, and you configure others manually.").
6. Troubleshooting—To resolve issues, reference the [error logs and troubleshooting guide](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.archive_o_common_errors_and_warnings_in_archive.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Errors and warnings that occur when using the Archive managed package, and how to solve them.").

Note The file storage pricing for Archive is calculated at 10% of the actual gigabytes (GBs) used. For example, if an org stores 100GBs of files in Archive, the effective storage GBs that are charged to the customer is 10GBs.
