# Variable Tag Modifiers

A modifier is a string added to a prospect field variable tag that tells the system how to format the output. You can also use a modifier to protect your embedded data and ensure that it’s inserted properly.

### Required Editions

<table class="slds-table slds-table_bordered slds-max-medium-table_stacked slds-m-bottom_small edition"><colgroup><col></colgroup><tbody><tr class=""><td class="slds-cell-wrap" style="vertical-align:top;">Available in: <span>All Account Engagement Editions</span></td></tr></tbody></table>

You append a modifier to the field name before the closing %% inside the curly braces. A variable tag with a modifier looks like this, where modifier is the modifier type: %%field\_ID{modifier}%%.

<table class="slds-table slds-table_bordered slds-max-medium-table_stacked slds-m-bottom_small ">
      <colgroup>
