# Set Up Metrics for Marketing Goals in Marketing Planning and Operations

With a semantic metric, a campaign goal calculates its actual from your Data 360 data and refreshes it daily without manual updates. Complete these tasks to make metrics available for goal owners to select for their goals.

Tip Marketing Intelligence is the recommended source for goal metrics. A metric can come from any semantic model, as long as its data resolves to a campaign.

Set up Marketing Intelligence so that it supplies the metrics a goal can track and grant goal owners access to them.

1. Set up Marketing Intelligence and deploy its semantic data model to a data space.

    See [Set Up Marketing Intelligence](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=mktg.mc_mi_setup.htm&language=en_US).
2. Assign goal owners a permission set group that gives them access to see and select metrics on their goals.

    See [Create Users and Assign Permissions](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=mktg.mc_mi_create_users.htm&language=en_US).

## Prepare Semantic Model for Goal Metrics

<table class="slds-table slds-table_bordered slds-max-medium-table_stacked slds-m-bottom_small permission">
          <colgroup>
            <col style="width:50%">
            <col style="width:50%">
          </colgroup>
          <thead class="slds-text-title_caps ">
            <tr class="">
              <th scope="colgroup" class="slds-cell-wrap" colspan="2" style="text-align:center;vertical-align:top;" id="d55306e189">User Permissions Needed</th>
            </tr>
          </thead>
          <tbody>
            <tr class="">
              <td data-label="User Permissions Needed" class="slds-cell-wrap" style="vertical-align:top;" headers="d55306e189 ">To prepare a semantic model:</td>

              <td class="slds-cell-wrap" style="vertical-align:top;" headers="d55306e189 ">
                <p>Data Cloud Architect permission set</p>
                <p>OR</p>
                <p style="margin-bottom:0;">MI Data Specialist
                  permission set group</p>
              </td>

            </tr>
          </tbody>
        </table>

Add a metric to the semantic model for each result that a goal tracks. Base each metric on data that resolves to a campaign. When a goal owner links a metric, the goal filters that metric's data to its own campaign and date range, then calculates the actual from only the matching records. If the metric's data can't resolve to a campaign, the goal's actual returns 0. After this setup, the metrics are ready to select for a marketing goal.

1. Create a metric for each result that a goal tracks.

    See [Create a Metric for a Semantic Model in Data 360](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=analytics.c360_a_sl_metrics_create.htm&language=en_US).
2. Include a time dimension on the metric so that each linked goal pulls its actual within the goal's start and end dates.

    For example, base a pipeline metric on the opportunity created date. A campaign goal running from January 1 to March 31 then counts only that quarter's pipeline.
