# Add Goals to a Campaign in Marketing Planning and Operations

Campaign managers add goals to a campaign to set the targets it drives, such as leads, registrations, or revenue. Campaign goals can track their actuals manually. They're the only goals that also calculate them automatically from a metric.

Keep these key aspects in mind when you add goals to a campaign.

| Area | Things to Keep in Mind |
| --- | --- |
| Goal basics and time frame | The goal's name identifies it, and its start and end dates set the time frame for measuring it. When a goal rolls up to a parent goal, its dates fall within the parent goal's dates. |
| Goal hierarchy and rollup | A campaign goal can roll up to a parent goal, so results aggregate up through the goal hierarchy. Each child goal's target can add up to the parent goal's target, without exceeding it. |
| Goal focus and indicator | A goal's type is the business pillar that it affects, such as revenue or retention. Its subtype is the specific indicator within that type, such as annual recurring revenue or churn rate. A child goal matches its parent goal's type and subtype. |
| Target value type | A goal tracks either a financial value or a number. Financial goals track monetary targets, such as revenue, bookings, or pipeline value. Number goals track counts such as leads, impressions, clicks, or customers. |
| Measurement and success rule | The measure type sets the unit that the goal tracks, such as customers or revenue. Its rule type sets how progress reads. An At Least rule succeeds when actuals meet or exceed the target, and an At Most rule succeeds when they stay at or below it. Use At Most for cost or efficiency metrics, where lower is better. |
| Actuals source | A campaign goal gets its actual values from manual entry or a semantic model metric. The goal can use a metric for its actuals only when it has no child goals. |

## Add a Goal to a Campaign

1. On a campaign, click **Add Goal** from the highlights panel.

Also add a goal from the Goals tab of the campaign's Planning & Operations area.
2. Enter the goal's details and set its current stage.
3. If the goal derives its actuals from a semantic model metric, select **Semantic Model** from the **Actual Source Type** list.
4. Save the goal.

Update the goal's actual value to track progress as the campaign runs, or have a metric update it for you.

## Set a Metric to Drive a Campaign Goal's Actuals

Link a campaign goal to a semantic model metric so it calculates its actual from your Data 360 data and refreshes daily, without manual updates.

A campaign goal can pull its actuals from a semantic model metric, so you don't enter or import results. The goal reads only the metric data that matches its own campaign and date range, then refreshes the actual early each day. This automatic calculation applies to campaign goals only, and only when the goal has no child goals. Your Salesforce admin sets up the metrics that you can select from.

1. From the Goals tab on the campaign, click the name of the goal that you want to select the semantic model metric for.
2. On the Goal Metric component, click **Configure Metric**.
3. Select the Data 360 data space that contains the semantic model with the metric.
4. Select the semantic model that contains the metric.
5. Select the metric.

Select a metric whose data resolves to the campaign. If it can't resolve to the campaign, the goal's actual returns 0.
6. If the goal doesn't have start and end dates, add the goal's time frame.

The goal uses its time frame to filter the metric's data and set the actual value for that period.
7. Preview the metric and save your changes.

The goal calculates its actual from the metric and refreshes it early each day in the org's time zone.

Besides the automated daily refresh, refresh a goal's actual value on-demand from the Goal Metric component. From there, also change the source metric or remove the metric.
