# Track Content Performance with Impression Regions

Use impression region tracking to measure how individual content blocks perform, giving you metrics that help inform your content decisions. See how dynamic content variations compare, or how a single content block performs across sends to different segments. Turn on tracking for a component, and then create custom reports to view engagement metrics. You can define an impression region with Handlebars or AMPscript functions.

Before you turn on tracking for a content block, review these guidelines and considerations:

- An impression region is a content block that you track. Naming a region helps you find its metrics in reporting and compare regions across a send.
- To report on impression regions, create a custom report. Available metrics include the number of impression regions per send, total clicks per region, unique clicks per region, and click rate per region.
- To track clicks, the impression region must contain a link and click tracking must be enabled on the Send Message element in Flow Builder.
- For accurate reporting, use a unique name for each impression region. Region names are case insensitive.
- You can nest impression regions, and you can include dynamic content. You can use regions can in both HTML and text portions of an email.
- You can turn on impression region tracking for an email content block directly in the editor. For other content types, use Handlebars or AMPscript to define the impression region. For more on these functions, see the [Handlebars](https://developer.salesforce.com/docs/marketing/handlebars-for-marketing-cloud-next/references/mcn-handlebars-content-references/mcn-handlebars-reference-content-beginimpressionregion.html) and [AMPscript](https://developer.salesforce.com/docs/marketing/marketing-cloud-ampscript/references/mc-ampscript-content/mc-ampscript-reference-content-begin-impression-region.html) developer docs.
- There’s no limit on the number of impression regions that you can add to an email.

## Track an Impression Region in an Email

You can turn on tracking for any content block from its Settings tab in the editor.

1. Create or open an email for editing.
    1. From the Campaigns tab, open a campaign or create one. Then, on the campaign record, next to the email that you want to work with, click **Edit**.
    2. From the Content tab, open a marketing workspace, and create or edit an email.
    3. From a flow, open a Send Email Message element, and edit the related email.
2. In the editor, select the content block you want to track.
3. On the block's Settings tab, enter a unique name for the impression region and turn on **Impression Region Tracking**.
4. Save your work.
5. To monitor performance of impression regions, create a custom report.

After you turn on tracking, you can use the code view in the email editor to review the Handlebars function in your content’s HTML. To edit the email from the code view, [convert it to code](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=mktg.mktg_content_email_html_create.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "In code view, view and edit message HTML and CSS for custom control over your email design. Also, advanced users can use Handlebars templating language to add scripting and conditional logic and perform data lookups. As you author, code view provides syntax validation, inline coding assistance, and search. Preview and test the email and publish it for use with a campaign. To change a published email or prevent it from sending in a campaign, you can unpublish it.").

## Track an Impression Region with Handlebars or AMPscript

To use impression region tracking in WhatsApp, RCS, SMS, or Mobile App Messaging, add Handlebars or AMPscript functions directly in the editor. For these steps, we focus on Handlebars.

1. Create or open a message for editing.
    1. From the Campaigns tab, open a campaign or create one. Then, on the campaign record, next to the message that you want to work with, click **Edit**.
    2. From the Content tab, open a marketing workspace and create or edit a message.
    3. From a flow, open a message element, and edit the related content.
2. In the editor, add the impression region Handlebars or AMPscript functions to your content, and then save your work.{{#impressionRegion "RegionName"}} Content {{/impressionRegion}}

Replace “RegionName” with a unique name for reporting and replace “Content” with the message content that you want to track, such as a link.
3. To monitor performance of impression regions, create a custom report.
