# Configure an Approved Email Template

Create a Distributed Marketing and Alerts template that includes approved content options, instead of creating content from scratch or uploading your own each time. Plus, set parts of the template as default or required to maintain brand compliance and consistency.

[View supported editions](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=mktg.mktg_editions.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Marketing Cloud Next is available in Growth and Advanced editions, and requires Salesforce Enterprise or Unlimited editions. Some features are limited by edition or purchased add-on. All functionality is available in Lightning Experience only.").

[View required permissions](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=mktg.mktg_dma_permissions.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Assign the required permissions for creating email templates and sending Distributed Marketing and Alerts messages.").

## Add Approved Content to an Email Template

1. On the Content tab, open the email template that you want to edit or [create an email template](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=mktg.mktg_content_create_email_template.htm&type=5&language=en_US).
2. Enter a title, description, and purpose for the template.
3. Enter a default subject line or preheader. Then turn on **Approved content** to add approved variations.

If a subject line or preheader is unlocked, the user can enter custom text even when approved options are available. To make sure that they choose only from the approved options, lock the field.
4. **Phrases**: Add up to 30 approved phrases per email template.

    - To automatically include a phrase and allow the user to edit or remove it, set it as default.
    - To automatically include a phrase and prevent the user from editing or removing it, set it as required.
5. **Images**: Add up to 30 approved images per email template.

    - You can set only one image as default.
    - While you can’t require an individual image, you can set the image section as required. Users must then select at least one image, unless you set a default image for them.
6. Add other content types.

    - You can set minimum and maximum character limits for a paragraph.
7. Save your work and publish the email template.

To [make an approved email template available](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=mktg.mktg_content_dma_create_flow.htm&type=5&language=en_US), create an event-triggered flow for Distributed Marketing and Alerts and add the published template.

## Manage Access to Email Template Content

By default, template-wide settings and individual content components are locked. Locking or unlocking the parent component automatically locks or unlocks all nested components.

You can adjust access to specific components in different ways.

- **Configure template-wide settings.** Go to the Settings tab of the template and give users access to change styles, layouts, settings, and any unlocked components in the email.
- **Add a data source.** Go to the Data Sources tab of the email template. Add the prebuilt **Distributed Marketing and Alerts Message Event** as the Event Data Provider type to use and preview certain merge fields in the email.
- **Unlock a component.** Select it on the canvas and give users access to modify it.
