# Legal Requirements

Different countries and regions manage their own policies and regulations around how and when you send marketing or promotional messages. Some countries require a type of explicit consent, such as confirmed opt-in, where someone signs up to receive your content and then verifies their email address.

Other regulations commonly include three important requirements around identification, unsubscribing, and data processing time.

- Clearly identify your business.
- Include a functioning unsubscribe mechanism.
- Process data in a timely manner (between 2 to 10 days).

When a message addresses an issue within an existing business relationship, it’s considered transactional or operational. These types of messages aren’t always subject to the same guidelines as promotional content. But because legal requirements vary by location, including countries and states or provinces, make sure that you understand any local laws for you and your recipient.
