# Unified Reporting Concepts and Terminology

The unified reporting suite in Marketing Cloud Engagement+ is built on the Salesforce Platform. It uses some concepts and terms that might be unfamiliar to existing Marketing Cloud Engagement users.

Data Access

A Marketing Cloud Admin or Data Cloud Architect can specify which data object each user has access to. They can also create field-level permissions. Field-level permissions determine the specific fields that users have access to. Both of these capabilities are necessary to meet modern compliance requirements.

Data Model Objects

Data model objects (DMOs) are objects in Data 360 that contain rows and columns of data. A standard DMO is similar to a Data View in Marketing Cloud Engagement. In Marketing Cloud Next, standard DMOs can include a large amount of data in one place. Compare them to data views in Marketing Cloud Engagement, which often require you to connect several tables by using SQL joins.

A custom DMO is similar to a data extension in Marketing Cloud Engagement, because it can contain any data you want to include. You can use both types of DMOs to build reports by using the drag-and-drop reporting interface in Marketing Cloud Next.

When you build a custom report in Marketing Cloud Next, you specify a DMO to use as the foundation for that data. A report can access data from up to 4 DMOs. DMO-based reports are helpful for viewing raw row-level data, such as the details of every send or engagement for a specific subscriber.

Data Space

A partitioned area in Data 360. You can use these partitions to organize your data. Business units and business unit groups in Marketing Cloud Engagement are a similar feature because they partition data in separate spaces that don’t interact with each other.

Semantic Data Model

A semantic data model (SDM) is a special data layer that exists on top of your DMOs. Use the SDM that comes with Marketing Cloud Next to build reports that focus on your specific marketing goals and requirements.

The SDM that’s included with Marketing Cloud Engagement+ includes data and metrics from the channels, campaigns, and journeys in your account. You can also create custom SDMs, or add custom datasets to the existing SDM for Marketing Cloud Next. If you plan to modify the included SDM, first make a copy of it, and then modify the copied version.
