# Require Question Completion

You can require respondents to complete questions.

1. From the main navigation, select **Surveys**.
2. Create or edit a survey.
3. On the Survey Designer tab, next to the question you want to change, click the pencil icon.
4. To require that a question be completed, click the exclamation point. To remove the completion requirement, click the blank space where the icon was.
5. To change the symbol for required questions, click Setup. In **the question required symbol(s)** field. The default required question symbol is "**\***".
6. To move the error message that displays when a survey respondent doesn’t complete a required question, in **Setup** in the **Question** section, select **bottom** as the **Question error location**. The question error message can’t be customized.
7. Save your changes.
