# Set Up an External FTP File Location with Marketing Cloud Engagement

Transfer files with an external FTP, SFTP, or FTPS site using a file location. The file location contains the site URL, port, and login details that Marketing Cloud Engagement uses to access your site.

To complete this task, you must have administrative permissions to view and manage file locations.

Note Marketing Cloud Engagement only supports passive mode connections for FTP interactions.

1. In Marketing Cloud Engagement Setup, in the Quick Find box, enter file, and then select **File Locations**.
2. Click **Create**.
3. Complete the information in the Properties section.
    1. For **Name**, enter a unique name that’s recognizable when you create an activity in Marketing Cloud Engagement.
    2. For **External Key**, enter a unique key that identifies the file location when using the API.
    3. For **Description**, enter details that help further identify the file location when you create an activity in Marketing Cloud Engagement.
4. Select the location type.
    - External FTP Site
    - External SFTP Site
    - External FTPS Site
5. Complete the location information.
    1. For **URL**, enter the location of the FTP site. This URL must directly open the default directory with no further navigation. For example, sftp.example.com/destinationDirectory.
    2. For **Port**, enter the FTP server port. For FTP and FTPS sites, use Port 21. For SFTP sites, use Port 22.
    3. For **Auth Type**, select the authentication method used to access the site. For FTP and FTPS sites, the only supported option is password authentication. For SFTP sites, you can choose Password or Auth Key authentication.
    4. For **Username**, **Password**, and **Auth Key**, enter the credentials to access the site.
6. Save the file location.

## SSH Keys for External SFTP
