# Create an SSH Key to Use with Marketing Cloud Engagement SFTP

Create an SSH key to use when authenticating your SFTP account.

1. Create an SSH key using a third-party tool, such as ssh-keygen or puttygen, with a minimum strength of 2048 bit (4096 bit is recommended).
2. In Marketing Cloud Engagement, hover over your name and click **Setup**.
3. Select **Data Management** | **Key Management**.
4. Click **Create**.
5. Select the **SSH** key type, and enter the name of your key.
6. Leave the external key field blank. After the first handshake, this field auto-populates with the key from the external provider.
7. Upload the key value.
8. Select **Public Key**.
9. Save your changes.
10. Add SSH authentication to a new or existing SFTP user. See [Manage Marketing Cloud Engagement SFTP Accounts](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=mktg.mc_overview_add_ftp_accounts.htm&language=en_US).
