# Define Segments

Follow these steps to define segments in Audience Builder.

If you do not filter your audience under the Filter tab, Audience Builder defines your segment using the total population.

1. To create a new audience, click an audience from the Audiences page or click **Create Audience**. The audience opens on the Filter tab when you create a new audience definition. The audience opens on Summary tab when you select a saved audience definition.
2. Click the **Segment** tab.
3. Drag your segment criteria over from the Attribute Library, or drag a saved segment from Segment Templates. To refresh your segment counts, click **Refresh Counts**.
4. Edit or cap your segment as necessary.
    - Hover over the segment and click ![Edit Icon](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-mktg-mc_contact_data-264-0-0-production-enus/0e4d875c-8c8c-4be4-8f13-c8278eafbbf9/mc_contact_data/images/cab_editattribute.png).
    - Use the **Segment Criteria** tab to perform these actions:
        - Drag new criteria into the segment.
        - Hover and click ![Edit Icon](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-mktg-mc_contact_data-264-0-0-production-enus/0e4d875c-8c8c-4be4-8f13-c8278eafbbf9/mc_contact_data/images/cab_editattribute.png) to edit the segment criteria label.
    - Use the Advanced Options tab to perform these actions:
        - Enter a Tracking Code
        - Cap your segment by number or percentage of contacts. If the number of subscribers available in the segment exceeds the cap value, the segment includes a random assortment of subscribers left in the segment. Each time you refresh the audience, the segment includes different subscribers.
        - To save your segment criteria, click **Create Template**.
        - Access saved segment templates by clicking **Segment Templates** in the Attribute Library.
    - Refresh any changes by clicking **Refresh**.
    - Click **Done**.
    - Click **Refresh Counts** again to update counts on all segments.
5. Save your audience by clicking **Save**.
6. Publish your audience.
