# How Activities are Tracked in B2B Referral Management

A referral promotion must track activities that advocates and their referred parties complete through the promotion's stages. For activities in each stage, a set of records is created or updated.

### Required Editions

Understand the records created or updated when you create a referral promotion with the Refer a Lead promotion template.

## Stage 3

In the third stage of a promotion, records are created to track the activities of advocates and their referred party based on whether advocates and their referred party are rewarded. In most promotions, advocates refer businesses at this stage.

<table class="slds-table slds-table_bordered slds-max-medium-table_stacked slds-m-bottom_small ">
        <colgroup>
          <col style="width:25%">
          <col style="width:75%">
        </colgroup>
        <thead class="slds-text-title_caps ">
          <tr class="">
            <th scope="col" class="slds-cell-wrap" style="vertical-align:top;" id="d22882e99">Scenario</th>
            <th scope="col" class="slds-cell-wrap" style="vertical-align:top;" id="d22882e102">Records Created</th>
          </tr>
        </thead>
        <tbody>
          <tr class="">
            <td data-label="Scenario" class="slds-cell-wrap" style="vertical-align:top;" headers="d22882e99 ">Advocates and their referred parties aren't rewarded.</td>

            <td data-label="Records Created" class="slds-cell-wrap" style="vertical-align:top;" headers="d22882e102 ">
              <ul>
                <li>Lead—A record is created for the referred party as a potential business
                  customer.</li>

                <li>Referral—A record is created to track the advocate’s referral of the referred
                  party. The record is associated with:<ul>
                    <li>Advocate’s account record</li>

                    <li>Referred Party’s lead record</li>

                    <li>Promotion record</li>

                    <li>Promotion Stage record that represents the promotion's third stage</li>

                  </ul>
                </li>

              </ul>
            </td>

          </tr>
        </tbody>
      </table>

## Stage 4

In the fourth stage of a promotion, records are created to track the activities of advocates and their referred parties based on whether advocates and their referred parties are rewarded. In most promotions referred parties qualify and an opportunity record is created.

<table class="slds-table slds-table_bordered slds-max-medium-table_stacked slds-m-bottom_small ">
        <colgroup>
          <col style="width:25%">
          <col style="width:75%">
        </colgroup>
        <thead class="slds-text-title_caps ">
          <tr class="">
            <th scope="col" class="slds-cell-wrap" style="vertical-align:top;" id="d22882e165">Scenario</th>
            <th scope="col" class="slds-cell-wrap" style="vertical-align:top;" id="d22882e168">Records Created</th>
          </tr>
        </thead>
        <tbody>
          <tr class="">
            <td data-label="Scenario" class="slds-cell-wrap" style="vertical-align:top;" headers="d22882e165 ">Advocates and their referred parties aren't rewarded.</td>

            <td data-label="Records Created" class="slds-cell-wrap" style="vertical-align:top;" headers="d22882e168 ">
              <ul>
                <li>Opportunity: When the lead qualifies, an opportunity record is created for the
                  referred party to track them as a potential business client.</li>

                <li>Account: A record is created for the referred party to track the details of
                  the referred party.</li>

              </ul>
            </td>

          </tr>
        </tbody>
      </table>

## Stage 5

In the fifth stage of a promotion, records are created to track the activities of advocates and their referred parties based on whether they are rewarded. In most promotions, the referred parties become customers of the company, and the opportunity is closed, completing the promotion's journey for both the advocates and their referred parties.

<table class="slds-table slds-table_bordered slds-max-medium-table_stacked slds-m-bottom_small ">
        <colgroup>
          <col style="width:25%">
          <col style="width:75%">
        </colgroup>
        <thead class="slds-text-title_caps ">
          <tr class="">
            <th scope="col" class="slds-cell-wrap" style="vertical-align:top;" id="d22882e217">Scenario</th>
            <th scope="col" class="slds-cell-wrap" style="vertical-align:top;" id="d22882e220">Records Created</th>
          </tr>

Important If multiple advocates refer the same business, the advocate whose referral code the referred party uses to sign up with the brand is rewarded.

## Ways to Track Referral Activities

You can track referral activities with Process Referral Event action. The admin or the developer can add the action to an existing business process. As part of this process, advocates can refer business and referred business can become customers of the company. The action is available for admins in Flow Builder or through Connect API and developers can access the action as an invocable action or from Apex.
