# Calculate Energy Savings

Calculate the product benefits selected by a customer by configuring the Usage Impact Factor and Benefit objects.

Salesforce uses Business Rules Engine (BRE) expression sets and aggregation automation from Data Processing Engine (DPE) to calculate the benefits.

Let's look at an example. An Energy Efficiency Program has a measure called Heatpump Rebate. We need to do some set up first. Set up Usage Impact objects such that the Usage Impact Factor is assigned to a measure within a program. For example, the Usage Impact Group Program Measure object EEProgram Impact Measures 2023 captures the impact of the product object Heatpump on the Program object Energy Efficiency Program.

Then, here's how Salesforce calculates the energy savings for each customer who applied for the rebate.

- The attributes of the Heatpump product are selected in the Utility Self Service Portal during runtime.
- The Process Approved Application flow invokes a computation flow, which calls an invocable action.
- The invocable action identifies the benefits of the product and program, and picks up the runtime attributes for the product. Then it uses BRE expression sets to calculate the benefits of the application.
- Each Benefit Type within a product has a BRE expression set that calculates the benefit. For example, for the Heat Pump product, an expression set calculates the Energy Savings in kWh, while another expression set calculates the Rebate in US$. The output of the BRE expression sets is stored in the Benefit object.
- The benefits are then aggregated by DPE based on Benefit Type, and presented in the charts in the Program Management Console.
