# Additional Availability Checks the Engine Makes

Beyond the explicit work rules and goals, the Field Service GradeSlotsService engine applies these implicit checks.

- Operating hours: The engine intersects the service appointment's scheduling window with the resource's or territory's operating hours to find valid time slots. There's no explicit Match Operating Hours work rule in this policy, so if a resource has no operating hours or its hours don't overlap the appointment's window, the engine evaluates the resource as having zero available slots.
- Existing appointments: The engine excludes time slots where the resource is booked.
- Travel time: The engine factors in travel time when travel rules are configured. The Emergency policy defines no travel rules, so travel time doesn't apply.
