## What is a Context Definition?

Context Definitions contain a complete set of information required to execute a particular process. Using context definitions, you can efficiently access data through every step of your app’s processes.

To see the standard definitions available in your org, in Setup, find and select Context Definitions.

You can extend, clone, or edit context definitions and simplify the sharing of business application data with other features in Context Service. See [Context Service](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=ind.context_service.htm&type=5&language=en_US).

## Business Use Case: Transform Data for Document Generation

Context Service uses the Data Processing Engine (DPE) to facilitate advanced data transformations for [Document Generation](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=ind.fsc_document_generation_overview.htm&language=en_US&type=5) (DocGen) within Salesforce Revenue Cloud. DocGen streamlines the creation of contracts, proposals, and invoices by using templates. While context definition and mapping manage the basic JSON data structure, DPE carries out complex, scalable transformations tailored to your business needs.

Example Use DPE to transform product bundle and quote line hierarchies, group data by price range or product selling model, and apply formulas to derive calculated values.

- **[Configure Context Definitions as Data Sources](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=ind.dpe_configure_ctx_datasources.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5)**
Read data from a context definition into Data Processing Engine definitions to transform and pass it for downstream processing.
- **[Configure Writeback Nodes as JSON](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=ind.dpe_configure_ctx_json_writeback.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5)**
Configure a JSON output to send transformed context data to downstream processes in the required format and hierarchy.
