# Custom Nodes

Custom nodes are pre-built transformation nodes shipped by consuming clouds such as Billing, Manufacturing Cloud, or Revenue Cloud to run domain-specific logic in a Data Processing Engine definition. Each custom node is tied to a specific process type.

### Required Editions

Important You can't create or extend custom nodes by using Python, Apex classes, or external functions. If you need custom processing logic that a custom node doesn't provide, handle it outside of Data Processing Engine, for example, by using a Flow.

Invoice Generation

The Invoice Generation process type includes a Create Billing Period Items custom node. This node processes billing schedule records and generates billing periods for each payment period in the schedule, such as monthly or quarterly installments. Billing Period Items store the payment data for each period and are used downstream to create invoice line items when the billing schedule is invoiced.
