# How Currency Conversion Works in Each Runtime

The runtime your definition uses and the currency conversion setting together determine whether CRM Analytics or Data 360 converts currency values or keeps them in their original currency.

## Context

In the CRM Analytics runtime, conversion happens during the data sync phase. In Data 360, conversion happens during transformation. The Monitor Workflow Services shows the currency conversion setting that was applied for each run.

## Currency Conversion On

Conversion of currency values happens during processing. Turn on when you want currency fields consolidated into a single currency for accurate calculations across records that have different source currencies, such as financial reporting, rollups, and comparisons.

CRM Analytics Runtime

By default, definitions with CRM Analytics runtime have currency conversion turned on. You can’t select a target currency for the CRM Analytics runtime. At design time (save, activate, or run), DPE checks whether the writeback node has a currency-type target field. If it does, DPE validates that the writeback user's currency matches the integration user's currency. During the data sync phase, CRM Analytics converts all currencies to the integration user's currency regardless of your org's corporate currency. Data Processing Engine then reads the converted currency fields in your data sources. The transformation and writeback happens on the converted currency value as the writeback user and integration user’s currency matches.

Example: Suppose 1 USD equals 100 INR and the source amount is 1,000 USD. In CRM Analytics, it gets converted to 100,000 INR based on the integration user’s currency of INR. Suppose the transformation doubles the amount, then during execution, the writeback operation stores 200,000 INR as the amount.

Important For update and upsert writeback operations on an existing Salesforce object, DPE preserves the currency fields in the integration user's currency from CRM Analytics. Convert the values back to the original currency in either the DPE definition or a downstream process.

Data 360 Runtime

When you turn on currency conversion for a definition with Data 360 runtime, select a target currency ISO code, such as USD, EUR, or GBP. During design time (at save, activate, or run) if the writeback node has a currency-type target field , DPE validates that the writeback user's currency matches the target currency. During the data transformation, Data 360 converts all currency values to the selected target currency. After transformation, DPE writes back the results with converted values and currencies.

## Currency Conversion Off

Keeps currency fields in their original currency without conversion. Turn off when your data sources have currency fields, but you want to preserve the original currencies or apply your own conversion processes before the update writeback operation.

When creating records, ensure the currency ISO code is mapped during insert writeback operation; otherwise, the DPE uses the writeback user's currency for the new entries.

When you turn off currency conversion for a definition with CRM Analytics runtime, instead of data sync in CRM Analytics, data for data sources (Salesforce objects) is fetched directly from the Salesforce object.

Monitor Workflow services list the data sources that skipped the data sync. In Monitoring Workflow Services, on the Details tab, the Additional Information section has a Data Sources Read Directly field. This field lists the data sources that skipped the data sync.

Note Direct fetching of data from source can see some performance impact on the definition execution time.

By default, definitions with Data 360 runtime have currency conversion turned off.

## Currency Conversion is Set to None

The Data Processing Engine applies no currency handling. Null is the default value for existing definitions that were created before currency conversion was available. Null is set by default for your definitions when your org doesn't have multi-currency enabled. This option isn’t visible on the UI.

Here’s the matrix that helps you understand these various currency conversion scenarios.

| Currency Conversion | Runtime Platform | Source Currency | Target Currency ISO | Writeback Operation | Currency Field Behavior | Data Retrieval Mode | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| None | Any | Any | Not Applicable | Any | No conversion; amounts and currency codes stored as-is | Not Applicable | Default behavior for existing active definitions; no multi-currency handling in the org. |
| Enabled | Data 360 | USD | INR | Insert | All currency amounts converted to INR. | Data Transformation | Conversion happens in the Data 360transform layer during transformation. |
| Enabled | Data 360 | EUR | INR | Upsert | All currency amounts converted to INR. | Data Transformation | Upsert matches on external ID, writes converted amounts and currency code. |
| Enabled | Data 360 | GBP | INR | Update | All currency amounts converted to INR. | Data Transformation | Update only modifies existing records with converted amounts and currency code. |
| Disabled | Data 360 | USD | Not Applicable | Any | Currency amounts are preserved as USD. | Data Transformation | No conversion applied. Currency code shows the original currency. |
| Enabled | CRM Analytics | USD | Not Applicable | Insert | All currency values are converted to writeback user's currency that matches the integration user’s currency (INR). | Data Sync | Conversion happens during data sync in CRM Analytics. |
| Enabled | CRM Analytics | GBP | Not Applicable | Update/Upsert | All currency values are converted to the integration user’s currency (INR). | Data Sync | Conversion happens before upsert or update operation during data sync in CRM Analytics. |
| Disabled | CRM Analytics | USD | Not Applicable | Update | Currency amounts are preserved as USD as in the original currency. | Direct | Data sync skipped for data sources and data read from a Salesforce object directly. No conversion applied. |
| Disabled | CRM Analytics | USD | Not Applicable | Insert | Amount is not converted but currency ISO code mapped or writeback user currency is shown. | Direct | Data sync skipped for data sources and data read from a Salesforce object directly. |
| Not Supported | On-Demand | Any | Not Applicable | Any | Not Supported | Direct | Currency conversion can’t be set for on-demand definitions. |
