# Add Transformation Nodes to Your Definition

After you create and configure the source and target nodes, add additional nodes that specify how the source data in the data source node must be processed before the results are written to the writeback object node.

### Required Editions

<table class="slds-table slds-table_bordered slds-max-medium-table_stacked slds-m-bottom_small edition"><colgroup><col></colgroup><tbody><tr class=""><td class="slds-cell-wrap" style="vertical-align:top;"><a href="https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=ind.dpe_editions.htm&amp;release=264.0.0&amp;type=5" title="Review the supported editions and availability for Data Processing Engine (DPE).">View supported editions</a>.</td></tr></tbody></table>

Add nodes such as append, join, filter, formula etc., to specify how you want to process and transform the source data. Each node type transforms your data in a different way. For example, you can use a join node to join two datasets, a formula node to calculate a field value using formulas, or an append node to append a dataset to another dataset. To know the list of all nodes, see [Data Processing Engine Nodes](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=ind.dpe_nodes.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "In Data Processing Engine, nodes are the basic building blocks that let you construct complex data processing flows. Nodes represent specific operations or transformations that can be performed on data. Each type of node lets you transform your data in a different way.").

1. In the node canvas, click **New Node**.
2. Select any node other than Data Source or Writeback Object as the node type.
3. Enter a name for your node.

The API name automatically populates from the name. For example, if the node name is Test Node, the API name autopopulates as Test\_Node.
4. Optionally, enter a description.
5. Save the node.

The node appears on the node canvas.

You are now ready to add and configure writeback object nodes to your Data Processing Engine definition.
