# Activate a Context Definition

To start using the context definition, you must first activate it. After it’s activated, your consuming application can execute various procedures using context definitions.

Before activating a context definition, verify these mapping details.

- The context definition must have at least one mapping associated with it.
- If there’s only one mapping, it must be set as the default mapping.

Important

Changes made to Salesforce metadata (such as modifying Salesforce Object fields) can take up to 24 hours to reflect in a context instance.

To clear the runtime schema cache make a DELETE request to the endpoint /connect/context-runtime-schema/clear. The cache is then refreshed during the next context build request.

Note You can't deactivate a context definition while it's referenced by an expression set. Remove the reference from the expression set before you deactivate the context definition.

1. From Setup, in the Quick Find box, enter Context Service, then select **Context Definitions**.
2. Choose the context definition you want to activate, click ![Arrow pointing down](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-ind-context_service-264-0-0-production-enus/e9dc37f3-cb53-4bc1-be8b-b6873099d0be/context_service/images/context_service_down_arrow_icon.png), and then select **Activate**.
