# Validation Compliance Controls

Compliance controls are the mechanisms that a company implements to enforce adherence to laws, regulations, and internal policies. A compliance control includes a control name, an objective, and an automation status. Each version of a compliance control contains specific details and configurations. When the control is modified, the details and configurations are updated.

Automate compliance controls by using context definitions and business rule logic. Context definitions contain a set of information that's required to run a validation control. Expression sets represent the business logic that enforces compliance requirements.

Use versions to implement controls uniformly across different departments by reusing active compliance controls across multiple validation procedures. For example, consider the prevention of compliance violations when you check personal identification information. The results must be consistent, regardless of whether the communication was sent via email, chat, or voice.
