# Turn On PDF Document Generation for Billing

Before Billing can create PDF documents for invoices, invoice previews, account statements, and other custom documents, enable server-side and batch document generation, then turn on Document Generation in Billing Settings. Batch document generation is required to generate invoice PDF documents from an invoice batch run.

### Required Editions

Before turning on Document Generation for Billing, turn on [Design Document Templates](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=ind.sf_contracts_setup_enable_design_document_templates_in_salesforce.htm&language=en_US).

1. From Setup, in the Quick Find box, enter document generation, and then select **Document Generation Settings**.
2. Click the arrow corresponding to the document generation setting, and then select **Edit**.
    
    If your org doesn’t have a Document Generation Setting record, create one. See [Enable Server-Side Document Generation Setting for the Omnistudio Package](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=ind.doc_gen_enable_server_side_docgen_setting_omnistudio_pkg.htm&language=en_US). Then edit the record and continue with these steps.
3. Turn on **Enable Server-Side Document Generation** and **Enable Batch Document Generation**.
    
    Enable Batch Document Generation is required to generate invoice PDF documents from an invoice batch run.
4. Click **Continue**.
5. From Setup, in the Quick Find box, enter Billing, and then select **Billing Settings**.
6. Turn on **Document Generation**.
    
    The Default Invoice Template, Default Invoice Preview Template, and Default Account Statement Template document templates are preselected as the default templates for generating invoice PDF documents, invoice preview PDF documents, and account statements.

After you turn on document generation, you or your Billing Operations users can [generate invoice PDF documents](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=ind.billing_invoice_document_generation_batch_and_single.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "After invoices are generated, manage invoice document templates, and then generate PDF documents for a batch of invoices or for an individual invoice."), [generate invoice previews](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=ind.billing_invoice_preview_create.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Preview invoices for the next two billing periods of orders and accounts. Generate and download PDF documents of the invoice previews."), and [account statements](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=ind.billing_account_statement.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Account statements consolidate billing activity for accounts over a time period so customers see transactions and outstanding balances in one statement.").

You can clone and customize the Default Invoice Template, Default Invoice Preview Template, Default Account Statement Template, or Sample Invoice Template document templates, or create your own document templates, and then select the custom document templates as the default ones.

Important

When your Salesforce org upgrades to Summer ’25 or a later release, to view the preselected Default Invoice Preview Template document template, your Billing admin must complete the one-time task of turning off Document Generation for Billing and turning it on again.
