To configure sequence policies, your Billing Admin must [turn On Sequential Numbering](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=ind.billing_setup_sequential_numbering_features.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Apply unique, gapless sequence numbers to transaction records to ensure financial compliance and a clear audit trail. You can also mandate assigning an invoice number to every posted invoice.").

1. From the App Launcher, find and select **Sequence Policies**.
2. Click **New**.
3. Enter a sequence policy name.
4. If necessary, enter a description.
5. Select the target object for which you’re creating the sequence policy.
6. Specify the sequence policy's effective date and time range.
7. To activate the sequence policy, select **Active**.

You can also create draft sequence policies and activate them later.
8. To generate and assign continuous sequential numbering to the target object records, select **Enforce gapless sequence**.

    ![Note](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-ind-revenue-264-0-0-production-enus/91ca99c6-d5c8-4986-b961-c6b7801e0d0d/images/icon_note.png)

Note Select this option to ensure sequential numbers are gapless. Any skipped or unassigned numbers are stored in the Sequence Gap Reconciliations records and reassigned to - to the target object records to maintain continuity.
9. Set selection conditions to determine which sequence policy is applied to a target object record.

If you don't specify any selection conditions, all eligible posted - target object records are automatically assigned a number.
10. Enter the sequence start number from which the sequential numbering begins.
11. To determine the value by which the sequential number increases, specify an increment value.
12. To indicate the last sequence value in the series, enter a maximum sequence number.
13. If you need the date, month, year, or fiscal year information to be included in the invoice and the credit memo number, select the date stamp format.
14. To indicate the minimum desired number of digits for the sequence number, add a minimum sequence number width.

If the generated sequence number is shorter than this width, it’s prepended with zeros. For example, if the width is 5 and the generated sequence number is 123, the sequence value becomes 00123.
15. Construct your sequence pattern with static text, placeholders, and fields from the target object.

The sequence pattern combines static text, such as prefixes or separators, with dynamic values. {SequenceValue} is required. You can also include {Date} and fields from the selected target object, such as invoice or credit memo.

After you select a target object, use Insert Field to add standard, custom, or formula fields. Supported field types are text, number, date, and text area. Combine multiple fields with static text in one pattern. The complete pattern can be up to 255 characters.

The {Date} placeholder is replaced with a date in the date stamp format defined in the sequence policy. Supported formats are MM-DD-YYYY, MM-YYYY, YYYY-YY (Fiscal Year), and YYYY.
16. Save the changes.

Sequential numbering is applied to invoice or credit memo records when they are posted. When you set up sequence policies, make sure to define a unique policy that resolves for invoice or credit memo records that meet a specific set of conditions.

You can edit a sequence policy only when it’s in draft status. After activation, you can't edit the Increment Number, Sequence Pattern, and Target Object fields. You can also delete a deactivated sequence policy if it isn’t associated with any invoice and credit memo record.
