# Assign Legal Entities to Accounting Periods

Assign legal entities to accounting periods, and associate each billing transaction to a specific accounting period of a legal entity.

Before you assign a legal entity to an accounting period, make sure that you create [legal entities](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=ind.billing_create_legal_entities.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Create legal entities to manage the billing and tax information for order products.") and [accounting periods](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=ind.billing_accounting_periods_create.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Create accounting periods to organize and store financial information for specific time frames. For example, if your company tracks performance quarterly, define quarterly accounting periods.").

1. From the App Launcher, find and select **Legal Entity Accounting Periods**.
2. Click **New**.
3. Select the legal entity that you want to assign to an accounting period.
4. Select **Open** as the status.
    
    When you create legal entity accounting periods, the status can only be set to Open.
5. Select an accounting period for the legal entity.

6. Save your work.

The name of the Legal Entity Accounting Period record is automatically generated by combining the names of the legal entity and the accounting period. Legal Entity Accounting Period records appear in the Legal Entity Accounting Periods related list of the specified Accounting Period record.

To view the related billing transactions on Legal Entity Accounting Period records, [add the billing transaction related lists to the Legal Entity Accounting Period page layout](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=service.workforce_engagement_add_related_list.htm&language=en_US). For example, add the Invoices related list.

Note You can't delete Legal Entity Accounting Period records.
