# Set Up Amazon Bedrock for External Storage Search

Build an Amazon Bedrock knowledge base and connect it to the Amazon S3 bucket used by your Salesforce org.

Before you begin:

- Verify that you have permission to create and manage Amazon Bedrock knowledge bases, data sources, and related resources.
- Make sure that the S3 bucket and knowledge base use the same AWS Region.
- Prepare metadata sidecars for files that existed before External Storage Search was enabled. See [Prepare Existing Files for Amazon Bedrock](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=ind.aps_external_storage_search_prepare_files.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Create metadata sidecar files so that the search service can associate existing Amazon S3 objects with Salesforce files.").

## Create an Amazon Bedrock Knowledge Base

1. In Amazon Bedrock, create a knowledge base.
2. Select the same AWS Region as the Amazon S3 bucket connected to your Salesforce org.
3. Complete the knowledge base configuration.

See [Knowledge bases](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/bedrock/latest/userguide/knowledge-base.html) in the AWS documentation.

## Configure the Amazon S3 Data Source

1. Open the Amazon Bedrock knowledge base.
2. Add an Amazon S3 data source.
3. Select the S3 bucket connected to your Salesforce org.
4. Complete the data source configuration.

See [Connect to Amazon S3 for your knowledge base](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/bedrock/latest/userguide/s3-data-source-connector.html) in the AWS documentation.
5. Synchronize the data source.

See [Sync your data source](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/bedrock/latest/userguide/kb-data-source-sync-ingest.html) in the AWS documentation.
6. Verify that the expected files and their Salesforce metadata are available to the knowledge base.
