Appointment reasons are mapped to work types. When a patient selects a reason for their visit, the underlying work type is used to fetch available time slots.

Each reason for a visit maps to one work type. One work type can map to multiple reasons for a visit.

For example, suppose a patient selects Annual Checkup as the reason for their visit. That reason maps to the work type called 30-minute office visit. That same 30-minute office visit work type can also map to additional reasons for the visit, such as follow-up appointment, diabetes checkup, or physical therapy.

1. In Object Manager, set up the Appointment Reason object.
    1. On the Fields & Relationships page, click **Appointment Reason**. Then add appointment reason picklist values.
    2. On the Page Layouts page, click **Appointment Reason Layout**. Verify that the page layout includes the Resource Type and Work Type for Established Patient fields.
2. If you use engagement channels, set up the Appointment Reason Engagement Channel Type object. On the Page Layouts page, click **Appointment Reason Engagement Channel Type Layout**. Verify that the page layout includes the Work Type for Established Patient field.
3. From the App Launcher, find and select **Appointment Reasons**, and then create an appointment reason record that maps to a work type.

    Keep in mind these details.

    | Fields | Details |
    | --- | --- |
    | Default Work Type, Work Type for Established Patient | Typically, work types for new patients have a longer appointment duration. If you use different work types for these patients, specify the work type for new patients in the Default Work Type field. Specify the work type for established patients in the Work Type for Established Patient field. If an established patient hasn't had a visit within the last three years, the patient is considered new. |
    | Default Image, Appointment Reason Image | Create a static resource to associate an appointment reason with an image, such as an image of a stethoscope. Then specify the resource in the Default Image field using the format resource/<ResourceName>. Leave the Appointment Reason Image field blank. |
    | Resource Type | Select either **Asset** or **Provider**. If you don’t specify a resource type, Provider is used by default. |
4. To make the appointment reason available to self-schedulers, select **Is Active**.
5. Save your changes.
