Note Beginning in Summer ’26, Chatter is turned off by default in all new orgs. For any features in these orgs that require access to Chatter functionality or the Chatter APIs, turn on Chatter by going to **Setup** | **Chatter Settings** and selecting **Enable**. For details, see [Chatter Is Turned Off by Default in New Orgs Beginning in Summer ’26](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=experience.collab_chatter_default_off.htm&type=5&language=en_US).

To use these settings, Chatter must be enabled in your org.

1. Open Experience Workspaces.
2. Click **Administration** | **Preferences**.
3. Change the desire settings and then save your changes.

- General

    - [Show nicknames](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.networks_enable_nickname_display.htm&type=5&language=en_US) instead of full names in your site. Enabling nickname display allows more privacy and protects member identities. This protection is especially helpful in a public site where unregistered visitors can access member profiles.
    - Enable Chatter messages, which let members have secure private conversations with other Chatter users. To expose Chatter messages for external users, administrators must also enable the Chatter tab in sites using the Salesforce Tabs + Visualforce template.
    - [Enable direct messages](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=experience.networks_enable_direct_messages.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Allow members to send direct messages to start a private conversation with up to 16 people, including the sender. Direct messages are supported in all Aura sites and in Lightning Bolt Solutions, such as the Lightning Partner Management solution."), which allows members to have secure private conversations in sites built using the Customer Service template.
    - [Optimize cached images for guest users on all devices](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=experience.networks_files_optimize_images_all_devices.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "When guest users visit your site, cached images are optimized to best suit the user’s phone, tablet, or desktop computer. Image optimization makes your site’s pages load faster, which creates a better browsing experience for your visitors."). Resize images for faster loading on all devices. This feature is available when you use Salesforce's CDN for Digital Experiences.
    - [Let guest users view asset files and CMS content available to the site](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.networks_public_access.htm&type=5&language=en_US). Asset files include images associated with topics, recognition badges, site branding, and account branding. If public access is enabled in Experience Builder at the page or site level, this preference is automatically enabled. To ensure that guest users can view CMS collections on your LWR site’s public pages, also enable Allow guest users to access public APIs.
    - [Use custom Visualforce error pages](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.networks_custom_error_pages_vf_auth.htm&type=5&language=en_US), if you want authenticated users to see your custom branded Visualforce error pages.
    - Show all settings in Workspaces that are hidden by default based on how you set up your site. Enabling this setting overrides the dynamic navigation provided in Experience Workspaces.
- Experience Management

    - [Allow members to flag posts, comments, or files for moderation](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=experience.networks_moderation_enable.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Turn on flagging for your Experience Cloud site to let members flag posts, comments, files, and messages that they deem inappropriate."). Members can flag items that contain inappropriate language or sensitive information.
    - [Enable Upvotes and Downvotes](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=experience.networks_chatter_updown_vote.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Enable upvoting and downvoting in lieu of liking questions and answers in your Experience Cloud site. When you enable upvoting and downvoting, members see an Upvote option under a question or answer and a Downvote option on the question or answer’s overflow menu. The Like option goes away. Upvoting and downvoting are disabled by default in Experience Cloud sites created in Spring ’19 and later.") to allow members to participate in evaluating the worth of a question or answer. Up and down voting is enabled by default in sites created as of Winter ’18 and later.
    - [Enable Reputation](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=experience.networks_reputation_enable.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Enable reputation so that site members are recognized and rewarded for participating.") to allow community managers to set up a point system that rewards users who participate in the site. Administrators set up corresponding reputation levels that users see on their profile.
    - [Enable knowledgeable people](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=experience.networks_reputation_enable.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Enable reputation so that site members are recognized and rewarded for participating.") so you can discover who's knowledgeable on topics and endorse people for their knowledge on a topic.
- Files

    - Set the maximum size in MB for uploaded files.
    - Specify the types of files that can be uploaded.

    ![Note](https://sf-zdocs-cdn-prod.zoominsoftware.com/tdta-experience-communities-264-0-0-production-enus/bf7df212-91a1-4fa3-a007-4d6f3e3b470b/images/icon_note.png)

Note Salesforce doesn't support downloads for files that are larger than 2 GB.

These additional optional features can be found in Setup and other areas of Experience Workspaces.

- [Assign Permission to Verify Answers for Your Company](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=experience.networks_chatter_company_verify.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Sometimes there’s more than one correct answer to a question. Among the correct answers, your company can prefer one course for people to follow. You can highlight an answer that your company endorses by marking it as Company Verified. Questions marked as Company Verified or as Best Answer are copied to the top of the thread under a Top Rated Answers section.") to allow selected members to mark an answer as company verified.
- [Assign Post Pinning Permission](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=experience.networks_chatter_pin_post.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Pin a post to give more exposure to your most critical information. In your site’s group and topics feeds, an authorized user can pin up to three posts to the top of the feed. A pinned post stays in place until an authorized user unpins it. Pinning a post is only available in Aura sites.") to allow selected members to pin a critical post to the top of a group or topics feed.
- [Assign a Default Experience to a User Profile](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=platform.network_affinity.htm&type=5&language=en_US) to associate that profile with a specific Experience Cloud site. Notification emails about site-agnostic objects, like cases, accounts, and opportunities, take on the default site’s branding. Links in the emails take users to the default site—no more news from nowhere.
- [Add Rich Publisher Apps to Your Feeds](https://help.salesforce.com/s/articleView?id=experience.networks_chatter_rich_publisher_apps.htm&release=264.0.0&type=5 "Customize the Chatter publisher with payloads that are unique to your business process. Add a form to a post; choose from a selection of branding images; add inspiration to your feed with profound quotations. Select from the custom apps your team creates or acquires from AppExchange. Add up to five apps to the Chatter publisher.") to enhance your feeds with items that are unique to your business process.
