# Customize Chatter Groups

Use record types to create group types with the layout and branding that you want. Then you can create custom groups.

Creating a group record type creates a group type that users can choose when they create Chatter groups.

1. From Setup, enter Groups in the Quick Find box, then select **Record Type**.
2. Click **New**.
3. Choose an existing record type as the basis for the new group type.
4. Enter a label and the name of the new record type.
    
    The label appears when users select a group type. The name is the unique API name.
5. Enter a description, which is visible to users.
6. To activate the record type, select **Active**.
7. To make the record type available to users with a particular profile, select **Make Available** next to that profile. To enable it for the group type for all profiles, select the checkbox in the header row.
8. Click **Next**.
9. Choose a page layout option for records of this type.
10. Save the record type.
